Cheap Titanium Rings Tough To Crack In Emergencies

Titanium wedding bands are becoming popular, jewelers say, as lightweight, less expensive alternatives to rings made of gold.

When the patient showed up in the emergency department, he was hurting. He'd taken a nice long soak in a warm tub, and a few hours later his fingers swelled enough to trap his ring. Now that finger was painful and swollen. The ring needed to come off, since restricted blood flow can lead to tissue death in the finger, which is about as fun as it sounds.

Ordinarily, this wouldn't be much of a problem. ER personnel are used to removing rings. "It's not uncommon at all," says Dr. Bret Nicks, an emergency room physician at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., who says he and his colleagues see traumatic injuries from working with heavy machinery such as cars or even the odd softball misfire. A published review of the problem also names "infection, skin disorders, allergic reactions, bee sting, and pregnancy" as causes for trapped rings.

Usually they can be removed using lubrication, elevating the hand or this nifty string trick. And if that fails, out comes the ring cutter. But as two physicians describe in a letter published online Thursday in Emergency Medicine Journal, this patient's ring was made of titanium.

Titanium rings are growing in popularity because they're very strong, light, hypoallergenic and less expensive than rings made of precious metals like gold or platinum. But that strength can also make them more difficult to remove. A normal ring cutter won't necessarily work, says Dr. Andrej Salibi, a plastic surgeon at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals in the UK. and co-author of the letter. Jewelers who work with titanium say the commercially pure grades are much softer and easier to cut than aircraft grade, an alloy that also includes aluminum and vanadium; the exact type of titanium in this patient's ring isn't known. And of course the degree of difficulty can be boosted by the thickness of the ring.

A titanium ring, before and after being removed by bolt cutters in a hospital emergency room.

In this case, the ring cutter failed, and the fire department came in with its own specialized cutting gear. The ring wouldn't budge. The patient was admitted to the hospital and spent the night with his hand elevated. The next morning one of the physicians suggested they try something else, namely bolt cutters, which are often on hand in hospitals.

It worked! But "the other problem is that once you cut it, you have to take it off," says Salibi. And that takes a lot of force. So using some large, heavy-duty paperclips, the two physicians pulled the ring apart. The man's finger was fine. The doctors say bolt cutters are preferable to dental saws or diamond-tipped saws, which aren't likely to be lying around the hospital and require more manpower.

Nicks, too, says bolt cutters can come in handy when other methods have failed. As with so many things in medicine, prevention is preferred, he says. "Any time you're working with heavy equipment, take your ring off." And if your hand is injured in any way, take off your rings immediately, before the swelling gets bad.

Calla Gold, a jewelry designer in Santa Barbara, Calif., says cheap titanium rings can't be as easily sized as traditional metals, which is why she doesn't use them as wedding jewelry.

"Let's face it, your finger doesn't stay the same size" over the years, she says. Rings made of all metals can get stuck, and Gold has a list of suggestions for removing them. If those at-home methods fail and there's a jeweler handy, he or she might be able to help, Gold says. And if that doesn't work, head to the ER.

Best Wedding Bands for Pear-Shaped Engagement Rings

With all the attention we like to give finding the perfect engagement ring, it's easy to forget about the wedding band. While choosing your wedding band might seem easy, the task gets tougher when you have a less conventional engagement ring. Even finding a wedding band for classic pear-shaped engagement rings can be difficult.

Which is why we tapped Olivia Landau, founder and CEO of The Clear Cut and all-around diamond expert, for her insight on finding the best band to fit against your pear-shaped diamond. "When shopping for your wedding band, the shape of your center stone on your engagement ring is less important than the actual setting of your engagement ring," she says.

According to Landau, once you know your setting, you'll be able to find the right band to complement your ring. If your stone is set in a solitaire setting or in a delicate pavé diamond band, you can choose something as simple as a matching band or perhaps even a curved one.

If your setting is more complicated, there are more things to consider. "If your pear-shaped diamond is set in a three-stone ring with side stones, you may have a bit of space between your engagement ring and your wedding band," she explains. "Because of this, you may want to consider an understated band as to not take away from your engagement ring."

Landau also adds that one thing you should avoid when searching for a wedding band to wear with your pear-shaped engagement ring is mixing faceting patterns on the same finger: "I wouldn't recommend getting a larger emerald-cut eternity band if you wanted to wear it on the same finger as your brilliant-cut pear-shaped engagement ring. The difference in the patterns can create a confused look."

London Best Wedding Band Life

We’re sometimes asked what it’s like earning a living as professional musicians in a London wedding band. The short answer is that it’s hard work but very fulfilling and a lot of fun. When the band performs at London weddings, what most people see is just the live performance. But there’s a great deal more that goes into being a professional London wedding band…

Musicianship of a professional wedding band

To be a top London wedding band, each band member must perform to an extremely high standard. It might be easy to forget but every member of the wedding band Azure has put in literally thousands of hours of practice on their instrument. In addition to completing a degree in music, each band members has invest further thousands of hours developing their skills and clocked up many hundreds of hours of live performance work.

The planning side of a wedding band

As well as maintaining a high level of musicianship, there is the all-important job of record keeping. Professional musicians need to plan many weeks and months ahead. When the band is booked to perform at a London wedding, each band member must know where they have to be and at what time, and plan their journey accordingly. The booking details are checked and rechecked by Stuart, the bandleader, in discussion with the client. Every detail from the venue address to the expected timings must be right. There is no such thing as an excuse when it comes to a client’s wedding. Each band member has to fit their other commitments around a booking. The band must take into account the travel time to and from the venue and of course the inevitable traffic delays!

Preparation of songs

Azure has a large repertoire, so from time to time band members need to revisit certain songs that a client may particularly like. A wedding usually includes a first dance. This is usually not in the band’s wedding repertoire. For this, each band member must transcribe and learn the first dance that the client has requested. It usually takes several hours of careful work to get a song polished to the very high Azure standard.

The wedding band working day

For the band, the big day begins much earlier than many people might expect. Equipment must be checked and loaded up, charts packed as well as spare strings and sticks, clothing ironed, the journey and traffic reports triple checked, and so on. As a professional London wedding band, Azure performs a great deal in London, but also in other parts of the UK. The travel time could be anything from 30 minutes to several hours. Depending on what time the band needs to arrive to set up, this could mean setting off at 10am for a performance that might not begin until 8pm!

On arrival at the venue, the Azure musicians liaise with the venue staff and will load in all the band equipment. Loading in and setting up takes an hour or so and it’s heavy work – even for the fighting fit Azure musicians! Again, all the band equipment is checked and rechecked. At the appropriate time the band perform a quick ‘sound check’ to adjust volume levels so they are optimal for the room and expected number of wedding guests.

The wedding band performance itself

Wedding band performing in LondonThis is of course what being a professional London wedding band is all about. Azure lives and breaths for performing live music, and are only satisfied when the dance floor is packed. On every wedding band performance, Azure gives their very best, carefully tailoring the songs to get the best possible response from the wedding guests. Check out Azure’s wedding band testimonials to see what previous clients had to say!

When the party is over

When the whole fabulous evening comes to an end, and the happy couple and guests head off into the sunset, the working day is not yet over for your London wedding band. This is when packing up begins. Equipment is dismantled, instruments are packed up again, dozens of electrical cables are coiled up nice and neatly for the next wedding band performance, and everything is carried back out again. Usually after about 40 minutes, vehicles are fully loaded up and the journey home begins. Depending on the venue location, this could mean anything from a 2am to 4am bedtime! Just long enough for a good sleep before doing it all again the following day.

Jennifer Lopez's engagement ring was made by a London jeweller

The £3.8 million diamond engagement ring worn by Jennifer Lopez was supplied by a Knightsbridge jeweller in a major coup for London, the Evening Standard has learned.

The star of Shades Of Blue and Maid In Manhattan, better known as JLo, has been sporting the emerald cut ring since she accepted a proposal from former baseball player Alex Rodriguez in the Bahamas this month.

However, despite feverish speculation in the jewellery world, little was known about the ring’s origins, until now. It has emerged that it was sourced from the Samer Halimeh store, close to Harrods, by a “middle man” acting on behalf of Mr Rodriguez.

The huge diamond, thought to be between 20 and 25 carats in size, was shown to the representative of the 43-year-old former New York Yankee, nicknamed A-Rod, as he toured the world to view the best available on the market, according to industry sources.

Once selected, the stone described by luxury wedding jewellery expert as “one helluva huge diamond” was set in a platinum ring with eagle claws by specialists working at the store and in other workshops around London. Beirut-born Mr Halimeh is known as the “red carpet jeweller” whose A-list clients include Naomi Campbell, Oprah Winfrey and Sir Elton John as well as the royal families of Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Brunei.

He opened his £10 million global flagship store said to be the most heavily fortified in London in 2017. The picture windows are fitted with 30mm bulletproof glass protected by “weaved steel” curtains. He chose London rather than New York where he has his Fifth Avenue corporate HQ — to base his biggest store because of its status as the “billionaire capital of the world”.

JLo, 49, who has been engaged five times and married three times, first “flashed” the wedding ring to her 89 million followers on Instagram nine days ago in a post that has attracted almost 5.5 million likes.

It was most recently seen when the couple went out for dinner in New York on Sunday. They have been together for two years but have not yet set a wedding date.

Mr Rodriguez was pictured with a black eye at Miami airport last week as rumours of an affair overshadowed the couple’s return from the Bahamas.

Jose Canseco, another ex-baseballer, accused him on Twitter of cheating with ex-wife Jessica Canseco, who denied the allegations. Neither Mr Rodriguez or Lopez have commented.

How to protect your engagement rings when you work out

Whether you're a seasoned gym rat or you've been upping your workouts leading up to your wedding day, you might want to consider taking off your engagement rings while you're there.

During physical activity, rings can get scratched or worse, bent. Metals like platinum and gold are relatively soft. So say you knock it on a dumbbell one too many times - if the ring gets bent enough, you run the risk of knocking your diamond out of its setting. Not only that, but a wedding ring could affect your grip when weight lifting, bruise your fingers or even scratch you.

However, where and how to store your ring when working out can be another issue. If it feels risky to leave it in the car or in a locker, there are other options. Take the the Findurings wristband, a small sweatband that has a pouch for with a zipper for tucking away jewels, or consider wearing a silicone ring cover.

You can shop some of our favorite options for keeping your engagement and wedding rings safe while working out Pinterest.

What Is A Halo Ring?

Proposing with engagement rings has been a practice for decades.

While some cynics say it’s just the result of a very successful advertising campaign by De Beers in the 1930s, we believe that there is a much more symbolic and emotional meaning behind it as well.

Engagement rings are more than just jewelry. They are a reminder, a promise of everlasting love.

Choosing the right engagement ring style shows that you’ve put a lot of thought and care into the proposal.

One of the most popular and stunning styles is the halo engagement ring. This jaw-dropping setting is sure to turn heads.

What Is A Halo Engagement Ring?

A halo ring features a large center stone, usually a diamond or other precious gem, surrounded by smaller stones (known as a pavé).

The pavé frames the center stone, enhancing the overall visual appeal and brightness of the ring.

There are many different kinds of halo wedding rings for women. Some are set with only colorless stones while others come in multiple, flashy colors.

There are also double or even triple halo rings that have multiple rows of pavés around the center stone.

The History Of The Halo Setting

The halo ring has seen a resurgence in popularity today, but it has a long and colorful history.

This ring style has been around since at least the Georgian Era in the 1700s when pearls were commonly used as the prominent center stone. Since then, it has undergone many changes and variations.

The Victorian Era halo ring was very elaborate, often containing large colored gemstones. This was done to mimic a flower-like look.

Decades later, the Art Deco movement of the 1920s inspired a new twist on the halo ring design.

Simpler and more sophisticated, these modern halo rings used symmetrical, geometric patterns to create an elegant yet bold ring.

Throughout the years, the halo ring has come in and out of style. It was extremely popular in the Golden Age of old Hollywood glamor but was much less sought after during World War II.

There was a resurgence of the Art Deco movement in the 1960s that saw the halo ring’s comeback for a short period of time.

Today, the halo engagement ring enjoys the #2 spot on the most popular engagement ring styles, second only to the solitaire ring.

Its timeless look makes it a great choice for the modern woman.

Why You Should Get A Halo Ring

It’s Popular

If you’re the type who wants to stay on trend, then you can’t go wrong with a halo ring. It’s currently one of the most popular styles in the world. But just because it’s trendy, it doesn’t mean that it will soon go out of style.

This design has been around for centuries, and it will surely be fashion-forward for centuries to come.

It’s Attention-Catching

Do you want to feel like a celebrity or member of the royal family? A halo rim captures the glitz and glam of an expensive ring—a ring that is worthy of a queen.

The smaller stones draw the gaze towards the center stone, making it look bigger, brighter, and more “wow”. With all eyes on your halo ring, you’re guaranteed to make a flashy statement wherever you go.

It Makes Your Center Stone Look Bigger

Whether you want to emphasize a 3-carat stone or make a 1-carat diamond ring look more extravagant, a halo ring will do the trick. Because of the surrounding pavé, any center stone will look much bigger in a halo setting.

This makes it a great choice if you want to save money on a smaller center diamond but still want to amaze and impress.

It’s Affordable Without Sacrificing Beauty

A smaller budget doesn’t mean you have to downsize on impact. Halo rings can look flashy without breaking the bank.

If you don’t want to splurge on a large high-carat stone, you can still get a bedazzled, sparkling ring with multiple micro-pavés.

You can even get the same carat level but for a much cheaper price. Our selection of halo engagement rings for women start from as low as $939.

It’s Customizable

One of the best things about halo rings is that it appeals to a wide range of women. It can look classic, trendy, modern, or vintage depending on how you style it.

You can create a truly unique halo engagement ring just by changing the center stone, cut, metal, or the number of halos.

You can also embellish the band or use colored gemstones if you want your ring to really stand out.

Should You Get An Designer Engagement Ring Setting?

More and more often, we are seeing a surge in clients looking for super unique designs. For those seeking engagement ring styles that are timeless, but with an edge, we recommend setting your center stone from east-to-west for an interesting take on the classics! Sure, it’s a big commitment and clients can be reluctant to divert from the standard at first, but with elongated shapes more popular than ever, we think this could be a welcome change in trends!

RS-353

What Shapes Does This Work For?

Any elongated shapes, where there is an obviously longer length side, will do the trick! Think oval, elongated cushion, radiant, marquise, and emerald cuts to maintain the symmetry of the cut with more finger coverage in the width! Asymmetrical shapes, such as the pear, are a bit more daring but no less beautiful!

SOR-15977

What Settings Can Accommodate This?

Almost any setting can be modified to an east-to-west version by custom order! Popular options like our invisible gallery setting, or even a standard floating or cathedral style can all be set east to west! For even more coverage, add a halo or a bezel to the center stone to embellish the look!

RS-224

Are There Any Benefits To Setting The Ring This Way?

Absolutely! One of the beautiful features of the east-west setting is how it showcases your wedding band. If you opt for a band that is thicker or more detailed, the east-west style helps to expose it a bit more, whereas standard settings cover up most of the top view! Some clients also feel that the east-west style can make a larger center stone feel less disruptive for every day wear!

SOR-14620

Are There Any Limitations To Setting The Ring This Way?

As with any design, there are a few things that don’t work quite as well for the east west model – for one, it would not be ideal for a 3-stone ring unless the center stone is on the smaller side!

VNR-12629

The Verdict: East-West settings are a gorgeous way to make a popular ring design look a bit more unique! Keep in mind it's a bolder commitment, so make sure you love it before creating your Lauren B ring!
